John Sutch Cranes, one of the country’s most trusted crane hire specialists, has welcomed Spierings Mobile Cranes engineers to its depot recently as part of the company's rigorous six-monthly safety inspection programme.
The comprehensive checks, carried out by Spierings' UK and Ireland service team, form a critical part of John Sutch Cranes' commitment to safety standards – a commitment that has defined the business throughout its 36+ years of operation.
Mark Sherlock, Service Engineer for Spierings Mobile Cranes UK and Ireland, explained the scope of the visit.
He said: "We are here to carry out enhancements, improvements and check the major components on the crane. Safety inspections are requested every six month’s here at Sutch’s, and we attend every six months to be part of there service programme.”
“Engineers also examine specialist safety devices, here being fitted alongside the rope guide we call the “sword” is a newly designed detection system for a potential incorrect positioning of the hoist or trolley rope during operation”
“Essentially, it’s an extra safety device that will stop any potential downtime.”

The inspections cover critical safety systems including the operator elevator, which is classified as a 'man rider' up to the operators cab, and must be inspected under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations). Engineers also examine specialist safety devices including the 'sword' – which is a rope guide system which can potentially have issues with the hoist and trolley rope being place the incorrect side for operation.
Mark explains: "The new detection system is an upgrade available from Spierings allowing the operator to detect any incorrect position of the hoist or trolley ropes before causing any failure, stopping operation. Essentially, it's an extra safety device that will stop any damage.
"It's available to be fitted on the 6-axle crane and it’s just one example of the safety upgrades from the manufacturer which is purchased by John Sutch Cranes.”
Spierings has worked closely with John Sutch Cranes for decades, John Sutch was one of the first UK crane hire companies to invest in Spierings. He bought his first Tower Crane from the Dutch company in the early 1990’s.
Mark has worked with ‘Sutchs’ for five years, and in that time he noticed their impressive safety record.
Mark added: “The company has a proactive approach to safety and technology. Safety is paramount with them. They are well up to date with everything – safety, technology and innovation. Their service team are always in touch with us, and any new technology or developments that take place, we work with Hayley and the team to ensure it's done properly."
The inspection programme extends across Spierings' entire UK customer base, with the manufacturer working with crane operators nationwide to ensure compliance.
"We are working with all our customers across the UK to check this. They have to specify if they want it, and we will be here," he confirmed.
