John Sutch Cranes is working night shifts, using a 300-tonne Grove GMK6300L-1 mobile crane to lift 12-tonne steel roof sections into place for a repeat client.
The sections go in over a steel frame and scaffold, so every lift is planned before the hook moves. Working nights gives a short window for each one, and the programme depends on the steel going in as planned.
The crane is a 300-tonne all-terrain machine, the kind that drives to site on the road and works on its own outriggers (the legs that spread and steady it). Its rear counterweight, the stacked blocks that balance the load, is fully built up for the job.
Chris Fisher, Manchester depot manager at John Sutch Cranes, said: "Working nights leaves less room for error, so the planning matters as much as the crane. Everyone on site knows the plan before the hook moves. That is how we work on every lift."
