John Sutch Cranes delivers precision Contract Lift at Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds

Some lifts have that bit of stardust on them. The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds was one of them

John Sutch Cranes, one of the North West's leading national crane hire and lifting solutions specialists, has successfully completed a precision contract lift at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds city centre - one of the United Kingdom's most prominent national heritage institutions.

The operation, carried out in June, required the installation of critical mechanical plant via a precision rooftop aperture at the Grade II listed museum, which sits on the banks of the River Aire in the heart of Leeds and houses the UK's national collection of arms and armour.

The project presented a series of technical and logistical challenges that demanded meticulous planning and on-site execution. Working within a constrained pedestrianised environment adjacent to a live public attraction, the John Sutch Cranes team was required to position a mobile crane in a restricted footprint, rig and lift the plant equipment, and lower the load through a precisely dimensioned rooftop opening into the plant room below, all within a live urban environment with zero margin for error.

Preparation for the lift began well in advance of mobilisation to site. The John Sutch Cranes team conducted a full site survey and developed a comprehensive lift plan in accordance plan, covering ground conditions, crane positioning, load path calculations, rooftop aperture dimensions and full coordination with all project partners.

The lift was executed on programme and exactly as planned. The load was rigged, the crane positioned and the lift completed: precise, controlled and clean from first pick to final placement. The mechanical plant was successfully installed into the plant room below and the operation was completed safely, with full client sign-off on completion.

Paul Parry, Sales Director at John Sutch Cranes, said: "The Royal Armouries job is exactly the type of project that defines what we are as a business. It is not just about having the right crane, it is about the planning, the people and the confidence to execute in an environment where there is absolutely no margin for error.

"The team were outstanding from start to finish and the client got exactly what they needed. Projects of this nature that are technically complex, in high-profile public locations, with heritage and public safety considerations in play are where our planning capability and operational discipline make the difference. This is what 36 years of lifting looks like."

The Royal Armouries project adds to a growing portfolio of high-profile contract lifts delivered by John Sutch Cranes across the North West and Yorkshire, which includes the Mersey Gateway Bridge construction programme, the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester alongside Tier 1 contractor BAM, and the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal development.
